Staff of The Woodlands Eating Disorders Center are dedicated to providing the highest quality, comprehensive care available for all forms of eating disorders, body image disturbances, compulsive exercise, and obesity. An individualized, multidisciplinary approach is used that addresses the psychosocial, behavioral, and medical aspects of these complex illnesses. The components of treatment typically include individual psychotherapy, nutritional counseling, family therapy, and medical monitoring. Other therapies and/or specialists may be recommended based on individual need. A thorough initial evaluation is conducted to develop an individual treatment plan. The center also partners with many healthcare professionals in the community. A list of pediatricians, family practice physicians, psychiatrists, and other specialists versed in the care of those with eating disorders can be provided upon request.
Treatment is also offered for mood and anxiety disorders, stress management and other adjustment/life issues. Psychological testing and therapeutic assessment are available as well. Therapeutic assessment is a collaborative form of testing/brief therapy in which the client seeks to gain self knowledge and understanding leading to better coping skills and life choices.
Eating disorders are not genuinely about food or weight. The thoughts and behaviors having to do with eating, weight, and body image are symptoms of underlying psychological issues which drive the eating disorder behavior. Consequently, treatment is aimed at resolving the underlying issues and replacing unhealthy coping skills (i.e., the eating disorder symptoms) with healthy ones. Insight-oriented psychotherapy along with cognitive-behavioral techniques and other scientifically supported interventions are used. This process must take place in a collaborative, caring environment in which the client feels free to identify, explore, and express all thoughts and feelings.
